Scale Effect Assessment of Innovative 3D-Printed Honeycomb under Quasi-Static Compression

Honeycomb cores are widely used in the aerospace and automotive fields as a part of protective structures. Unfortunately, standard prismatic honeycomb offer limited amount energy absorption under lateral loads suffer from degradation their impact-deadening properties when dimensional scale is increased. In this work, multiscale study on quasi-static load carried out 3D-printed core samples constituted by variable section compared to cases hexagonal having same mass external dimensions. When doubling case loads, novel geometry showed substantial absence specific degradation, whereas suffered 12.2%-degradation. Furthermore, increasing scale, shows delay densification onset. The variable-core an average increase, terms 46.8% for regular 71.4% double scale. Under axial 12.4%-decrease was observed with geometry, which, nevertheless, relatively constant profile reaction force compression: property could potentially allow it avoid pre-crushing.
